Where the Wild Things Are certainly did not disappoint.  It was beautifully filmed and every quality from the book was preserved with the expanded plot feeling normal.  There are hints at the ramifications of a broken family but the theme is not overdone or forced.  Like the book, there are deeper issues surrounding the story but in the end it is still a simple tale of love, loneliness and youth.

The Cake Eaters
A story of two families and their unusual connections.  I wouldn't really call it a portrait, it's more of a sketch, in a good way.  You see imperfections and raw moments of life portrayed in a way that other bigger-budget films cannot accomplish.  And like most sketches it is unfinished in a sort of subtle elegant way.  The ending is not so much the end or final note as it is a hint at new beginnings, suiting the actual nature of time, never truly stopping.  Things end, and begin again.  Visit the film's site here.

That Thing You Do
Catchy, nostalgic, and not bad to look at either.  For me, this movie will always be on the favorites list.
